Filipino star Aunor pleads guilty to drug charge:Posted By: Janine Delacroix LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Filipino superstar Nora Aunor has pleaded guilty to methamphetamine possession and entered a court-supervised drug treatment program to get the charges dismissed, prosecutors said on Thursday.Aunor, who was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport in March 2005 after a baggage screener found the illegal drug in her luggage, in December enrolled in a different program that did not require a guilty plea. The film and music star found that program did not fit her lifestyle as an entertainer because it prohibited travel, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney. "When a person wants to clean up their life, this is how it's handled," Robison said. "But she has a long way to go." The new program lasts 18 months and is less restrictive, Robison said, though it still requires routine drug testing. When Aunor completes the program, Robison said, she can ask the judge to dismiss the charge. Little known in the United States, Aunor is one of the biggest stars in the Philippines, where she was born into poverty and first gained fame at age 14 after winning a national singing competition in the late 1960s. Known widely in her home country as "The Superstar," she has made some 170 films and recorded dozens of hit pop singles, filling arenas with devoted fans. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in September, Aunor said she had been living in the San Francisco area since 2004 to gain a measure of anonymity and had put her faith in God to see her through the drug charges.
